Musée Gustave Moreau and the Mystery Staircase

Do you recall my recent post about giving photo credits on blogs? Well, something interesting happened which led me to find the origin of the image I was fiercely searching to credit.

My friend Renee saw the photo of the spiral staircase on my blog and excitedly gave me a call. That gorgeous staircase stood out in her memory. She recalled her favorite museum in Paris, the Musée Gustave Moreau, and that staircase in the museum was one she would never forget.

So thanks to Renee, I did a little searching and voila! She was right!

Gustav Moreau was a prolific 19th Century French symbolist painter, sometimes considered to be one of the precursors of surrealist painting. As a professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts one of his notable students was Matisse, and long before his death in 1892 he had already decided that a museum of his own work should be created.

He extended and converted the house that had belonged to his parents, creating giant workshops and display rooms. Even with the immense size of the rooms, there was not enough space to show all the accumulated works; Moreau left 4,800 drawings and 450 watercolors, many of which are in storage.

Huge room with filled to the brim with Moreau's work...

The monumental staircase leads you up to yet another floor above...

private living areas...

"Gustave Moreau collected his very dear souvenirs, relating to his parents and to Alexandrine Dureux, his "best and only friend..." Nothing has changed in a century."

An Instant Family!

It's always fun getting to know my customers and imagining their decorating style. I love it when people send me photos of their homes/rooms to see how they integrated their vintage purchases into their decor.

I was thrilled to receive this photo from my customer Lisa. Lisa recently purchased this large aristocratic lady oil painting to add to her collection of portraits. Isn't it fun amongst her other portraits, and in in front of her cute white chair? From Southern California to San Francisco, and final destination, Atlanta, Georgia, glad this lady found a nice home!

If any of you have any photos of your home that you'd like to share, please send them my way.

Thanks again Lisa!

Let Them Eat Cake!

My friend's daughter Jennifer recently celebrated her Sweet Sixteen birthday with this whimsical cake designed by artist Melissa Hutton. When I saw these photos of the cake I had to share them! The cake has a pink & black cheetah-print frosted background laced with large strands of pearls and amazing charms made of molded marzipan! Too pretty to eat! The charms represent some of Jen's favorite things like Columbia University logo (she is attending a summer writing program), New York & the Eiffel Tower, (she loves NYC & dreams of Paris), a key (representing getting a driver's license at 16).

Melissa Hutton is not only a cake designer but an amazing painter. Melissa has been an active member of the San Francisco art scene since 1992. Check out some of her fine work on these wonderful chairs and paintings.

Vignettes

Photo from parishotelboutique.com

I just love anything displayed a grouping. Vintage paintings, trophies, hotel silver, china, the list goes on and on...I had fun taking photos (below) of some of the oil paintings on my website and grouping them all together. They make so much of a statement as a vignette. What are some of your favorite vignettes?

Vintage Lady Portraits

painting from parishotelboutique.com

Collecting vintage lady portraits is not a new obsession for me. I've been filling my home with these whimsical pieces for about 15 years now. Everywhere I turn there are ladies staring at me! At some point I had to start selling off some of my paintings because frankly, my house just isn't that large. I just returned from a buying trip and found a few vintage treasures for myself and my website.

Each of these portraits are so unique and tell a story.

This latest acquisition (above) is a large portrait of an affluent woman from Santa Barbara, California. available at parishotelboutique.com

This large portrait above my sofa is signed, "Cincinnati Opera Guild" on the back. Now this glamorous opera star is the focal point of our livingroom! Here are some more paintings in my stairwell. Don't they make such a nice grouping?

The new Spring issue of O At Home Magazine features Los Angeles event planner Mindy Weiss's home. Mindy plans the most lavish celebrity weddings. She too has an obsession with vintage lady portraits. Aren't they great?
